HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah — There is a new way for Airmen and other Hill employees to get around base.

Hill’s E-Scooter/E-Bike Ride Share Program kicked off May 6, with 20 e-scooters and 10 e-bikes being placed at several locations on base, including the Airmen dorms, the Airmen Recreation Center and Falcon Hill.

“The goal of this program is to provide Airman and civilians who do not have transportation with an affordable means to commute to and from common areas around the base,” said Master Sgt. Warner Houston, commandant of the Airman Leadership School and project officer for the e-scooter program.

Houston said that the program has already proven successful, with around 700 rides taken in just the first weekend.

To ride a bike or scooter, individuals should download the Lime smart phone app and sign up for the service.  They will then be able to see where the vehicles are and either reserve one from the app or simply walk up to it and activate it.

To get reduced rates to ride the vehicles, including a discount on the unlock fee and a seven cents per minute charge while using the vehicle, users should register for Lime Access at https://www.li.me/why/community/lime-access.  Choose Ogden as the city, then upload a military, veterans or civilian government ID.  In the dropdown menu for which program qualifies you for Lime Access, select Veteran ID card.  If asked for additional documentation, re-upload the ID card.

The bikes and scooters were placed on the base at no cost to the Air Force. Vendors will handle the charging and maintenance of the bikes and scooters, and will monitor usage.  When certain locations are showing high volume of activity, that location will be added as a regular spot to find a ride.

Houston said certain areas on base are off limits, including the flightline and housing areas. If a bike or scooter enters a prohibited location, it will stop working. Riders will also not be able to take the vehicles off base.

Officials are asking riders to follow the following safety guidelines:

  • Wear a helmet while operating an e-scooter/e-bike
  • Do not operate on roads with a speed limit over 25 mph
  • Do not operate on sidewalks
  • Do not use electronic devices while operating
  • Do not attempt to ride doubles on scooter
